Quarts – candlelight

Quartz Candle Holder, a Little Winter Landscape

Milky white gives this quartz candle holder a soft brightness, broken by clearer-looking patches and pale grey shading. Its broad, roughly rectangular outline is anything but regular: uneven edges and angular faces give the exterior a rugged character. Bright highlights catch these faces, picking out their angles against the gentler tones of the surrounding surface.

At the centre, a circular recess changes the rhythm. Its smoother-looking walls sit in deeper shade. The contrast suggests a tiny winter landscape, all bright ridges around a sheltered hollow. There is charm in that meeting of shapes: the rough exterior refuses a neat outline, while the circle within gives this candle-holder a distinct, simple centre.
